UAE Cuts Tourist VAT Refund Times to One Business Day Using AI Platform

The UAE Federal Tax Authority has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered digital platform reducing tourist VAT refund processing to one business day, down from approximately nine days. Developed with scheme operator Planet, the system is operational at Dubai International Airport, Zayed International Airport, and Sharjah International Airport. The paperless process allows eligible travellers whose purchases do not require physical inspection to complete claims directly via a mobile app.

Tourists shopping in the United Arab Emirates can now receive Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds within one business day, down from approximately nine days previously, according to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). The acceleration follows the rollout of an artificial intelligence-driven platform developed in partnership with Planet, the authorised operator of the UAE's Tourist Tax Refund Scheme.

The upgraded system is currently operational across Dubai International Airport, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah International Airport. The initiative is designed to eliminate paper-based documentation, shorten waiting times at departure terminals, and automate transaction eligibility checks.

Under the outlined procedure, visitors download Planet's mobile application and complete digital registration using facial recognition, alongside saving images of their passport and bank card. Before departing the UAE, travellers scan a dynamic QR code displayed at designated VAT refund service points at the airport, which initiates transaction processing in the app.

Where no physical inspection of goods is necessary under applicable rules, visitors can complete their refund request entirely within the application without queueing at manned desks. If transactions require inspection, users are notified via the app and directed to smart gates equipped with facial recognition for verification before the refund is issued.
