The UAE Financial Intelligence Unit (UAE FIU) and Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 5 to enhance the exchange of financial intelligence and technical expertise, The Filipino Times reported. The partnership aims to improve coordination in identifying and tackling financial-crime risks within the virtual assets industry.

The pact was signed by UAE FIU Chief Ali Faisal Ba'Alawi and VARA Chief Executive Officer Matthew White. Under the agreement, both authorities will share relevant operational information and expertise in accordance with applicable statutory provisions and confidentiality rules.

Ba'Alawi said closer coordination between supervisory authorities is increasingly necessary as financial crimes become more technologically sophisticated and transnational. He noted that the cooperation will boost capacity to detect and analyze suspicious transactions while tracking emerging financial crime patterns linked to virtual assets.

White stated that effective market oversight requires linking supervisory data with actionable financial intelligence. He emphasized that sustained collaboration among regulatory bodies, law enforcement, the UAE FIU, and virtual asset service providers remains essential to preventing illicit financial flows.

The UAE FIU collects and examines suspicious transaction reports from financial institutions, designated non-financial businesses and professions, and virtual asset service providers to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. VARA, established in March 2022, oversees and regulates virtual asset activities across Dubai, including free zones, excluding the Dubai International Financial Centre.
