UAE and China Deepen Energy and Technology Ties Through ADNOC-CNPC Partnership

Cooperation between China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is expanding from capital investment into technology, digitalization, and operational deployment. Key collaborative ventures include the Bab Gas Cap and Umm Shaif Gas Cap projects, along with the rollout of AI tools across drilling rigs. The partnership is highlighted as a model for bilateral energy security and technological integration.

The energy partnership between the UAE and China is shifting beyond traditional trade and capital investment toward shared technology, digitalization, and operational collaboration, according to an analysis published in The National. The evolving cooperation between the China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) illustrates this transition across complex reservoir management, drilling, and decarbonization initiatives.

Key joint upstream projects include the Bab Gas Cap concession, which CNPC joined alongside other international partners and which is projected to yield 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas daily. CNPC is also partnering in the development of the Umm Shaif Gas Cap, targeting over 600 million cubic feet of gas per day by 2030, a project requiring complex pressure management over an established producing oil reservoir.

Technical collaboration traces back to 2017, when CNPC was appointed asset leader for the North East Bab (NEB) oilfield group and created a dedicated technical centre. Advanced technologies applied there helped double annual field production while curbing unit technical costs. Similarly, at the Al Yasat onshore-offshore project, CNPC’s Monobore Expandable Casing Technology established a world record in casing diameter and operational length.

Digitalization and artificial intelligence have also become operational priorities. ADNOC has deployed an AI-enabled monitoring platform across more than 120 drilling rigs, while more than 150 technologies have been registered for onshore field applications, spanning enhanced oil recovery, automated well completions, and robotics.
