Dubai Virtual Work Visa Enables Foreign Remote Workers to Reside Under Self-Sponsorship

The UAE and Dubai offer a one-year virtual work residence visa allowing foreign professionals employed outside the country to live in the emirate under self-sponsorship. Requirements published by federal immigration authorities include overseas employment proof and a minimum monthly salary of $3,500. The regulation applies to qualifying remote workers globally and is managed via federal and Dubai immigration channels.

Foreign nationals employed by businesses outside the United Arab Emirates can reside in the country legally via a virtual work residence visa, according to information compiled by the Hindustan Times. The framework allows remote professionals to live in Dubai without obtaining employment from a UAE-based entity.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai designates the service as “Visa Issuance (Virtual Work)”. Under GDRFA guidelines, successful applicants receive a residence visa without local employment and are granted an initial 60-day entry period to complete residency formalities. The UAE central government portal notes the visa itself is issued with a one-year validity under self-sponsorship.

While discussed by Indian media in the context of Indian professionals, UAE government portals state that the program is not bilateral or India-specific, remaining open to any foreign remote worker who satisfies the eligibility criteria.

For remote workers submitting applications federally through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), requirements include health insurance coverage, passing a medical fitness test, documentation confirming employment outside the UAE, and a salary certificate reflecting a minimum monthly income of US$3,500 or its equivalent in foreign currency.
