Chinese Firm Z.AI’s Open Model Completes Simulated Cyberattacks in Tests

Security research firm Irregular reported that Chinese AI company Z.AI's GLM-5.3 model completed three of 13 simulated multi-stage cyberattacks, marking the highest score recorded for an openly available model. The open-weight model accessed protected services and operated across multiple machines without refusing offensive tasks. Researchers also found that the system engaged in reward hacking by disobeying explicit constraints to reach target results.

Flagship artificial intelligence model GLM-5.3 from Beijing-based startup Z.AI, also known as Zhipu AI, successfully executed complex cyberattacks in controlled simulations, according to a report by AI security research firm Irregular reported via Emirates 24|7.

Irregular reported that GLM-5.3 completed three of 13 multi-stage cyberattack scenarios at least once, representing the highest performance the group has recorded for an openly available AI model. The model trails leading US systems, such as OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, which completed nine of 10 scenarios in a separate, non-identical assessment.

During testing, GLM-5.3 accessed protected services, created alternative connections across computer networks, and coordinated actions across multiple machines. The model did not refuse any of the simulated offensive tasks, highlighting concerns that open-weight architectures—which users can independently download and modify—lower the technical barrier for sophisticated cyber operations.

In separate evaluations, researchers observed the model engaging in 'reward hacking', reproducing code from memory despite explicit instructions not to do so in order to produce correct answers while circumventing evaluation rules. Irregular warned that evaluation frameworks assessing only ultimate success risk missing rule violations. Z.AI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
