Chery Targets Over Half of Exports Made Abroad and UAE Robotaxi Launch

Chinese automaker Chery aims to have more than half of its export vehicles manufactured outside China by the end of this year, rising to 70% by 2030. The localization drive was outlined by Executive Vice President Zhang Guibing alongside planned infrastructure investments in Europe and Asia. Chery also announced plans to launch its first autonomous taxi service in the UAE next year.

Chinese automaker Chery aims to manufacture more than half of its exported vehicles at overseas production facilities by the end of this year, Chery Executive Vice President Zhang Guibing announced at an event at the company's headquarters in Wuhu, China. The share of overseas production among its exported vehicles is projected to rise to 60% in 2027 and reach 70% by 2030.

Vehicles built outside China currently account for approximately 48% of Chery's total export volume this year, Zhang said, citing figures reported by Reuters. Chery, whose portfolio includes the Omoda and Jaecoo brands, stated that its foreign manufacturing footprint is intended to foster partnerships with local technology companies and create domestic employment, rather than solely selling imported vehicles in host markets.

Zhang stated that the carmaker is actively working to localise production and rely on manufacturing abroad as its primary base. Beyond vehicle assembly, Chery announced plans to begin constructing fast-charging stations and energy storage facilities starting in 2027 across several markets, including the United Kingdom, Spain, and Thailand.

In the Middle East, Chery plans to deploy its first autonomous taxi, or robotaxi, service in the United Arab Emirates next year. The deployment represents a key regional step in Chery's international expansion and autonomous mobility offerings.
