US Treasury Cites UAE and Regional Restrictions in Iran Sanctions Campaign

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that international diplomatic pressure has led regional partners to impose banking and aviation restrictions on Iran. The measures include flight bans on Iranian carriers by the UAE, Turkey, and Oman, alongside UAE Central Bank transaction blocks on Iran's Bank Melli. US officials reiterated warnings that foreign entities servicing Iranian aircraft face secondary sanctions risks.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on September 26 that enforcement teams deployed globally by Washington have driven international measures to isolate Iran economically. Writing on social media platform X, Bessent stated that US officials held talks with governments worldwide to demand regulatory and financial actions against Iranian operations.

Regional partners have implemented sweeping civil aviation curbs. According to Bessent and official statements, Turkey and Oman halted flights operated by Iranian private carrier Mahan Air. Additionally, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) suspended all flights by Iranian airlines to and from the United Arab Emirates until further notice.

Banking regulators in the Middle East have enacted parallel financial restrictions. The Central Bank of the UAE blocked transactions to and from Iran for local branches of Iran's Bank Melli, citing violations regarding anti-money laundering, combating terrorism financing, and proliferation financing rules. Separately, Turkish regulators revoked the banking licence of Iran's Bank Mellat.

The US Treasury reiterated that any international entities assisting Iranian aviation operations or facilitating prohibited transactions risk total exclusion from the US dollar clearing system. While major regional hubs have curtailed Iranian air links, certain smaller Iranian carriers reportedly maintain limited international routes, including services to China.
