The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced the launch of the Health Sector Climate Adaptation Plan (2026–2031) during the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit. The national initiative is designed to protect communities from the escalating health impacts of climate change and maintain the continuity of healthcare services during periods of climatic stress.
According to the ministry, the framework moves the health system from reacting to illness after occurrence toward anticipating risks and preventing harm before it reaches the community. Identified focus areas include heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, cardiovascular strain from extreme temperatures, respiratory complications linked to dust storms and degraded air quality, and the spread of vector-borne illnesses.
Official statements indicated that extreme weather events can also disrupt hospital infrastructure, medical supply chains, patient access to care, and mental wellbeing. The adaptation plan prioritises developing early warning systems for severe heat and air quality anomalies, while bolstering hospital resilience against environmental pressures.
The initiative was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, local health authorities, and specialised partners. It directly aligns with the UAE National Climate Change Adaptation Plan and broader national integration efforts between environmental and public health policies.
