The UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has launched an artificial intelligence-driven digital platform designed to streamline Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds for departing tourists, Arabian Business reported.

The system is operational across Dubai International Airport, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah International Airport. It was developed in partnership with tax refund operator Planet.

According to the FTA, the automated platform utilizes facial recognition, digital passport capture, and automated purchase validation. The technological upgrade reduces tourist VAT refund disbursement times from approximately nine days to one business day.

Departing travelers scan a dynamic QR code at the airport, allowing the AI system to assess whether a physical goods inspection is necessary or if the VAT refund can be instantly approved.
