UAE Caps Individual Resident Car Ownership at Five Vehicles Starting 2027

Under new federal traffic regulations taking effect in January 2027, individual UAE residents holding an Emirates ID will be limited to owning and registering up to five vehicles. Standard registration will cover the first two vehicles, with additional surcharges applied to every vehicle beyond the second. The regulation is designed exclusively for individual car owners rather than businesses to help manage traffic congestion.

Individual residents holding an Emirates ID in the UAE will be permitted to own and register a maximum of five vehicles starting in January 2027, according to a report by What's On citing federal traffic regulations. The measure forms part of broader governmental efforts to regulate vehicle volumes on public roads, curb traffic congestion, and lower peak rush hour travel delays.

Under the updated rules, annual registration will allow two cars under the standard framework, while mandatory additional surcharge fees will be applied to each licensed vehicle registered beyond the second. The ceiling is restricted to individual vehicle owners and does not apply to commercial registrations held by businesses.

The report attributed the registration caps to the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure as a measure to tackle rising road density. Specific details regarding the exact fee amounts for additional vehicles, as well as grace periods or transfer guidelines for motorists currently exceeding the five-car limit, have not yet been detailed in the regulations.
