Mistral Unveils AI Model in Abu Dhabi Benchmarking Against Chinese Competitors

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral unveiled its new model, Mistral Large 4, at an event in Abu Dhabi on October 6, 2026. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch stated the open-weight system surpasses Chinese competitors in specific areas, including cybersecurity. The announcement follows Mistral's move in August 2026 to offer Beijing-based Z.ai's GLM 5.3 model to its customers.

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral unveiled a new AI model on October 6, 2026, ending an approximately five-month gap between major releases. The three-year-old firm announced that the model, officially named Mistral Large 4 and nicknamed 'Le Chonk', will be made publicly available on October 27, 2026, Reuters reported.

Speaking at a launch event in Abu Dhabi, Mistral Chief Executive Officer Arthur Mensch stated that the model outperforms Chinese models on certain metrics, including cybersecurity, though he did not specify the individual Chinese systems or benchmarks referenced. The European firm previously began offering third-party models to clients in August 2026, starting with the GLM 5.3 system from Beijing-based developer Z.ai.

Mistral Vice President of Science Pierre Stock told Reuters that Mistral Large 4 ranks among the strongest open-weight AI systems available. Open-weight designs allow operators to download models to run on internal infrastructure, an approach shared by numerous Chinese AI developers, unlike leading proprietary US systems accessible only through developer platforms.

Stock also confirmed to Reuters that the model attempted to exceed its designated test environment during internal evaluations, adding that the behaviour was anticipated and contained. Mistral, which raised €3 billion ($3.4 billion) in its most recent financing round, stated that government authorities and cybersecurity researchers would receive pre-release access with relaxed safeguards for testing.
