According to statistics from TrendForce's Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Observation cited by 36Kr, Chinese energy storage companies disclosed around 94GWh in total energy storage system orders during the third quarter of 2026. Disclosed signed contracts reached approximately 74GWh, of which overseas orders accounted for 67.8GWh, representing 93% of the signed total.
The Middle East emerged as a major destination, contributing 21.3GWh in signed capacity and representing 28.7% of total global signings. Among the single largest deals, BYD secured an 11.275GWh energy storage order with UAE clean energy developer Masdar, while Sungrow bagged another 7.5GWh contract in the UAE. In addition, Gotion High-Tech signed a 6GWh deal in Saudi Arabia, and Huawei secured a 4GWh project in Egypt.
Europe remained the largest regional market, accounting for 31.2GWh or 42% of signed orders. Large-scale utility projects dominated the quarter's results: 19 deals of 1GWh or greater reached a cumulative 62.2GWh, accounting for 84% of all signed contract volumes.
The overseas push comes amid shifting market fundamentals at home. While Chinese suppliers captured all of the top ten global spots in energy storage battery shipments during the first half of 2026 (totalling 461.3GWh), domestic newly commissioned storage installations fell 18% year-on-year to 21.81GW (58.60GWh). The report notes that China's planned cell manufacturing capacity approaches 2,000GWh against real global demand of 1,026GWh, prompting manufacturers to seek deployment opportunities overseas.
