Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has awarded Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech 6 GWh of capacity in Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) procurement. The award accounts for approximately 75% of the overall G1 project, which totals 2 GW/8 GWh and carries an estimated valuation of $1.16 billion.
Gotion secured all three core project sites—Al Muwayah, Haden, and Al Kahafa—each sized at 500 MW/2 GWh. The project marks the initial large-scale international deployment of the company's Gotion Grid utility storage platform. According to Gotion, the desert-engineered system functions in temperatures ranging from -30°C to 55°C, cuts high-temperature degradation by 40% compared to conventional units, and offers a 25-year design life.
All three installations will integrate into Saudi Arabia's 380 kV backbone transmission network with remote operation capabilities and AI-driven management systems. Beyond Saudi Arabia, Gotion is expanding its Middle East and North Africa footprint to approximately 9 GWh, including a 1.5 GWh BESS and planned 3 GWh factory in Egypt, as well as a 1.2 GWh project in Morocco with ACWA Power.
Separately, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po held talks in Doha on September 27, 2026, during the 11th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Meeting with Qatar's Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari and AIIB President Zou Jiayi, Chan explored bilateral collaboration in cross-border green finance, digital public infrastructure, transition financing, and catastrophe bond issuances connecting China, Hong Kong, and the Gulf region.
