Chinese automaker Chery is preparing to introduce its driverless taxi technology into international markets through a planned strategic partnership with UAE-based technology company K2, Arabian Business reported. Chery Auto announced it would showcase a purpose-built Level 4 (L4) autonomous robotaxi and sign a strategic cooperation agreement with Abu Dhabi-based K2 at its International User Summit in Wuhu, China.
Chery stated that the robotaxi is engineered specifically for autonomous operations from inception, rather than being a conventional production vehicle retrofitted with self-driving hardware. The vehicle features app-based controls that enable passengers to remotely adjust cabin temperatures before pickup, as well as unlock doors and access the boot without an onboard driver. It is also designed to automate key fleet operations, such as repositioning, energy replenishment, vehicle cleaning, and inspections.
According to the automaker, the system is designed for international deployment by accommodating differences in traffic regulations, climate conditions, and local communications infrastructure. Chery outlined a six-part safety management framework encompassing passenger protection, environmental sensing, algorithmic decision-making, redundant vehicle controls, cloud-based monitoring, and fleet management.
The announcement does not confirm whether K2 will directly operate the Chery robotaxi fleet, supply local operational infrastructure, or assist with UAE regulatory and commercial approvals. K2 previously entered into a separate cooperation agreement with Chinese mobility operator CaoCao to conduct testing and deploy an initial robotaxi fleet in Abu Dhabi.
