China targets initial large-scale rollout of solid-state batteries by 2030

China has set a national roadmap to advance all-solid-state batteries toward initial large-scale deployment by 2030. The initiative leverages a vertically integrated industrial ecosystem spanning cell makers, material processors, and state agencies. According to the International Energy Agency, China manufactured over 80 percent of the world's batteries in 2025.

China has launched a national roadmap aiming to transition all-solid-state batteries from research laboratories toward initial large-scale deployment by 2030, Gulf News reported. The state-backed strategy seeks to extend the country's manufacturing lead into next-generation battery chemistries offering longer driving range, faster charging, and enhanced safety.

According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), China manufactured more than 80% of the world's batteries in 2025. The agency noted that China also accounted for approximately 85% of global lithium-ion battery output and upwards of 70% of global electric vehicle manufacturing, providing domestic producers with unmatched scale across raw material procurement and cell production.

The report highlighted that while global competitors such as Tesla possess significant capital and brand recognition, China maintains a dense, vertically integrated ecosystem connecting cell producers, equipment suppliers, mineral processors, academic researchers, and government agencies.

The strategy sets an objective for 'initial large-scale application' rather than widespread mass-market adoption by 2030, reflecting technical and economic hurdles. Solid-state technology continues to confront elevated production costs, interface stability challenges between solid electrolytes and electrodes, and complex manufacturing requirements necessary for automotive scale.
