Citi announced the expansion of Citi Token Services into Japan and the United Arab Emirates, extending its proprietary blockchain-based liquidity and payment network to seven global markets. Alongside Japan and the UAE, the service operates in the United States, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
The platform uses tokenized deposits on a private-permissioned blockchain to facilitate programmable, near-instantaneous transfers. According to the bank, clients with corporate accounts in Japan and the UAE can move funds to and from their accounts or to other client accounts across enabled locations without restrictions from banking cut-off times or local holiday calendars.
Transaction capabilities vary by jurisdiction. In the UAE, the platform supports both US dollar and euro transfers, allowing clients to manage multi-currency liquidity around the clock. In Japan, the service currently supports US dollar transactions.
Citi stated that Citi Token Services has processed billions of dollars in transactions to date. The bank described the expansion as part of its ongoing investments to connect traditional banking infrastructure with emerging digital asset networks for institutional liquidity and collateral management.
