Saudi Arabia and Chinese industrial partners have announced plans to expand engineering and technological collaboration in seawater desalination, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency.

Speaking at the 2026 World Marine Development Forum in Qingdao, China, Tariq Nada, Vice President of Saudi utility developer ACWA Power, stated that desalination represents a critical lifeline for Saudi water security. He also pointed out commercial potential in extracting mineral resources from concentrated brine.

Nada noted that Chinese engineering firms and equipment manufacturers already serve as key contractors across major desalination projects in Saudi Arabia. Moving forward, both sides plan to pursue joint research into energy-efficient membrane technologies and zero-liquid-discharge systems.
