UAE Nuclear Regulator Reviews Barakah Plant Operations and Regulatory Developments

The Board of Management of the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation met to review operational and regulatory updates across the nuclear sector. Discussions addressed the operations of the four units at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, environmental monitoring initiatives, and research and development projects. The Board of Management of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) reviewed key regulatory updates, operational efficiency initiatives, and national capability development in the nuclear sector during its meeting, Gulf Today reported, citing WAM.

FANR Director-General Hamad Al Kaabi briefed members on organisational operations, including improvements to customer experience, the launch of the UAE's first National Environmental Radiation Measurements Portal, and progress in national capacity building. Al Kaabi also highlighted FANR's international engagements and upcoming participation in international nuclear discussions and forums.

The board received an operational status update covering the four units of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant along with planned activities. According to the report, FANR carries out regular inspections at the facility to ensure the operator complies with safety, security, and regulatory standards.

Additionally, board members reviewed updates on research and development initiatives covering nuclear safety, radiation protection, environmental studies, and emerging technologies, alongside efforts to apply research findings to regulatory decision-making. The board was also briefed on FANR's Agentic AI Transformation Programme, which aims to integrate artificial intelligence across regulatory procedures and government operations under established governance and human oversight.
