Update — October 22, 2026 5:12 PM CST: The U.S. Department of State has ordered non-emergency government personnel and eligible family members to leave Saudi Arabia following intensified attacks on civilian airports. Other regional U.S. embassies have moved to restricted operations amid broader regional security concerns. U.S. officials also confirmed a military presence drawdown at selected Middle East facilities.

The U.S. Department of State issued an ordered departure on October 21 for non-emergency U.S. government employees and family members in Saudi Arabia.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that Iranian-supported Houthis have intensified strikes on Saudi civilian airports and critical infrastructure. The decision follows a series of regional attacks, including a previous strike at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that resulted in 12 deaths and more than 300 injuries.

In response to mounting security concerns, other regional U.S. embassies have adjusted their operations to restricted status. U.S. officials also confirmed that the military has been quietly drawing down personnel numbers at select installations across the Middle East.
