Sharjah Ruler Extends Bereavement Leave for Government and University Employees

Sharjah has updated statutory bereavement leave rules for emirate government and university personnel. Under the directive, employees receive five days of paid leave for deaths occurring inside the UAE and eight days if the death occurs abroad. The policy covers a wide range of close relatives to strengthen family support.

Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, issued an executive directive updating statutory bereavement leave entitlements for Sharjah government employees and university staff.

Under the revised rules, eligible staff are granted five days of paid bereavement leave when the death of a close relative occurs within the UAE. If the death occurs outside the country, the leave period is extended to eight days.

Abdullah Al Zaabi, head of the Sharjah Human Resources Department, stated that the policy applies to the passing of various close relatives, including parents, grandparents, spouses, children, siblings, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
