Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company plans to expand its investments in China over the coming years, CEO Khaldoon Al Mubarak told 21st Century Business Herald in an interview in Beijing on October 12, 2026. The fund plans to focus capital deployment on four priority areas over the next three to five years: life sciences, energy and the energy transition, infrastructure, and technology.

Al Mubarak stated that Mubadala expects its investment activity in China to increase by at least 15% to 20% annually. To support this pipeline, the institution is doubling its local resources and pursuing larger, high-conviction transactions, marking a shift from a broad investment posture to a more selective, large-scale direct investment model.

Mubadala entered China in 2015 and has deployed over $20 billion in the country to date. Its investment model evolved from an initial $10 billion UAE–China joint investment fund into direct minority and equity holdings. Recent activity cited includes participation in a transaction valued at approximately $1 billion for a minority stake in coffee chain Luckin Coffee.

Globally, Mubadala manages $385 billion in assets across six continents. In 2025, its assets under management grew by 17%, while global capital deployment rose 20% to 143 billion UAE dirhams (approximately $39 billion). The fund reported five-year and ten-year annualized returns of 10.7% and 10.3%, respectively.
