Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company has agreed to acquire a strategic minority equity stake in Luckin Coffee in a transaction valued at approximately $1 billion. Mohamed Albadr, Mubadala's head of Asia, stated that the sovereign investor plans to back the Chinese coffee chain's technology-driven operations, digital capabilities, and overseas retail expansion.

Luckin Coffee reported second-quarter revenue of 15.89 billion yuan, marking a 28.5 percent increase year-on-year, alongside an operating profit increase of 22 percent to 2.12 billion yuan. The chain added 2,714 net new stores in the second quarter, expanding its network to 36,310 locations globally, including more than 35,000 stores across China, while average monthly transacting customers reached 113 million.

The investment highlights broader structural shifts across China's coffee sector from aggressive store footprint expansion to profitability and operational discipline. Competitors such as Starbucks China, Lucky Cup, and Tims China are adjusting their strategies, with operators increasingly focusing on store productivity, scenario-based retailing, and managing operating costs.
