French artificial intelligence firm Mistral announced on Tuesday the upcoming release of "Le Chonk," its largest AI open-weight model, officially designated Mistral Large 4, DW reported. The model is scheduled to become publicly available on October 27, with cybersecurity specialists and government agencies receiving earlier access to an evaluation version featuring fewer safety restrictions.
Unlike closed systems operated by US-based providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, Le Chonk is an open-weight system, allowing users to download parameters and run calculations locally on private hardware to protect confidential data, according to the report. DW noted that while major American providers primarily rely on closed architectures, multiple Chinese competitors operate open-weight models.
Speaking at a Mistral corporate event held in Abu Dhabi, Chief Executive Officer Arthur Mensch stated that the new architecture is "actually above the Chinese models" in areas including cyber capabilities, though he did not name specific competitor systems. Mensch added that "the narrative that Europe cannot compete is something that is not true".
Le Chonk marks the three-year-old firm's first major AI model launch since May, DW reported. The announcement follows a €3 billion ($3.4 billion) fundraising round completed by Mistral last month, which the report identified as the largest technology capital raise in Europe to date.
