China has contributed significantly to the global energy transition and emissions reduction by advancing renewable energy technologies, expanding manufacturing capacity, and driving down the costs of clean energy hardware, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Director-General Francesco La Camera said in an interview in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking to Xinhua on October 22, 2026, La Camera stated that China's primary contribution is supplying low-cost technologies to international markets at competitive prices. He noted that technological progress originating from China has led to sharp decreases in the cost of solar panels, wind turbine components, and batteries, making clean energy equipment more accessible to countries working to decrease fossil fuel dependence.
Domestically, China has continued substantial capital deployment into renewable energy infrastructure. Citing data from China's National Energy Administration, La Camera noted that installed photovoltaic power capacity reached 1.286 billion kilowatts by the end of July, overtaking coal-fired power capacity for the first time to become the nation's largest power source by installed capacity.
La Camera observed that these domestic milestones reflect China's progress in transforming its national power structure and fulfilling international climate and emissions commitments, with certain targets achieved ahead of schedule. Having toured renewable energy facilities across China, the IRENA director-general also pointed to the country's scale of implementation, noting significant progress in offshore wind development.
