Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts valued at Dhs3 billion for four new stormwater drainage projects across the emirate, according to Gulf Business. The contracts form part of Phase 3 of Dubai's wider Dhs30 billion Tasreef programme, which seeks to upgrade drainage capacity and reinforce infrastructure against heavy rainfall and climate-related events.
The project scope encompasses the construction and extension of approximately 100 kilometres of main drainage lines with pipe diameters reaching up to three metres. Covering an area of nearly 100 square kilometres, the lines will connect key economic, commercial, and residential districts—including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, Al Manara, Al Quoz, Al Barsha, Al Wasl, Za'abeel, Al Bada'a, Al Satwa, and Al Marmoom—to the main stormwater network.
Dubai Municipality stated that the projects are being carried out under the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Overall, the Tasreef programme is engineered to expand Dubai's stormwater drainage capacity by 700 per cent while reducing costs related to pumping station construction, operation, and maintenance by 20 per cent.
Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the initiative aims to strengthen the emirate's operational resilience against climate change while accommodating urban and demographic growth. The municipality noted that the programme also supports the goals of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy.
