Saudi Aramco is nearing the award of the main engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the fifth phase of its Jafurah unconventional shale gas field expansion project, according to Business News Report.

China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC) has emerged as the leading frontrunner to secure the contract package. The fifth phase entails the construction of three new gas compression stations, each engineered with an operational capacity of 200 million cubic feet per day.

The forthcoming award follows earlier development packages at Jafurah, including a $2.24 billion contract previously secured by a consortium comprising China's Sinopec and Spain's Técnicas Reunidas.

Located in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, the Jafurah basin covers an area of 17,000 square kilometres and holds an estimated 229 trillion cubic feet of unconventional gas reserves.
