China's telecommunications sector maintained steady growth during the first eight months of the year, supported by continued investment in digital infrastructure, according to official data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
By the end of August, China had built 5.195 million 5G base stations, representing 39.7 percent of the country's total mobile phone base stations. Total mobile phone subscriptions across the three major telecom operators and China Broadnet stood at 1.849 billion, with 1.311 billion connected to 5G networks.
Fixed broadband users across the three major telecom carriers reached 704 million by the end of August, reflecting a net addition of 13.65 million subscribers since the end of the previous year. Mobile internet data traffic increased 17.3 percent year-on-year during the eight-month period, reaching 297.1 billion gigabytes.
MIIT figures indicate that gigabit optical network services are now available in all counties, while 5G networks cover all towns and more than 95 percent of administrative villages nationwide. Under the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), China aims to increase the added value of core digital economy industries to 12.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2030.
