The 1.5-gigawatt Abu Dhabi PV3 Al Ajban solar power project in northeastern Abu Dhabi has entered its final construction phase and is approaching commercial grid connection, according to a report by Gaia Living News. The desert installation spans approximately 20 square kilometers and represents Power Construction Corporation of China's (PowerChina) first major solar power initiative in the UAE.
Engineering, procurement, and construction for the facility are being executed by PowerChina through its subsidiary Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited. Construction on the site incorporated advanced Chinese-made automated photovoltaic installation robots to assist assembly operations.
Once operational, the Al Ajban complex is scheduled to generate 4.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is estimated to be sufficient to power roughly 160,000 households. The plant is projected to curb annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.4 million metric tons in support of the UAE's net-zero 2050 transition targets.
The project forms part of a wider deployment of Chinese renewable energy technology across the UAE, which also includes Shanghai Electric Group's involvement in phases four and five of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, as well as PowerChina's delivery of the UAE Wind Program in 2023.
