Chinese energy storage manufacturer Gotion High-Tech has secured contracts to supply 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of utility-scale battery energy storage systems across three projects in Saudi Arabia. The award covers the Al Muwayah and Haden projects in the Makkah region, alongside the Al Kahafa project in the Hail region.
Each facility will feature a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) and 2 GWh, delivering a combined 1.5GW/6GWh. Together, they account for 75 percent of the Saudi Power Procurement Company's (SPPC) 2GW/8GWh first group (G1) procurement programme, which carries an estimated total value of approximately $1.16 billion.
The deployment marks the first large-scale international rollout of the Gotion Grid utility system. According to the company, the systems are designed for remote operation and will connect directly to Saudi Arabia's 380-kilovolt transmission network, incorporating an AI-based battery management system for lifecycle diagnostics, safety monitoring, and dispatch.
Last month, SPPC signed 15-year Storage Service Agreements for the three projects with a consortium consisting of ACWA Power, Saudi Energy Company, and Al Sharif Contracting and Development Company. Gotion stated that its total battery storage portfolio across the Middle East and North Africa region currently stands at approximately 9GWh, including projects in Egypt and Morocco.
