Saudi Arabia Qualifies 13 Firms Including UAE and Chinese Entities for Gas IPPs

Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has qualified 13 companies to bid for the third round of the kingdom's combined-cycle gas turbine independent power producer programme. The qualified pool features regional and international developers, including UAE-based Taqa and Etihad Development Company alongside China's PowerChina. The projects will be executed under a build-own-operate model with provision for future carbon capture readiness.

Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), the kingdom's principal buyer, has qualified 13 international and regional developers to bid for the third round of Saudi Arabia's combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) independent power producer (IPP) programme, MEED reported.

The qualified entities include UAE-based Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) and Etihad Development Company, as well as China's PowerChina. The list also features Acwa, Al-Bawani Capital, Al-Jomaih Energy & Water, Marafiq, Nesma Renewable Energy, and Saudi Energy from Saudi Arabia, alongside international players EDF (France), Kepco (South Korea), Mitsubishi Power (Japan), and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan).

According to the report, the projects will be developed on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis, with each venture executed through a special-purpose project company wholly owned by the winning bidder. Statements of qualification were submitted on 23 August, and developers have begun forming consortiums, with three to four bidding groups anticipated to submit offers.

The planned power stations will feature advanced H-class or J-class gas turbine technology designed to accommodate future carbon capture installations. Each IPP facility is expected to include two or three gas turbine generators, accompanying heat recovery steam generators with duct firing, and one or two steam turbine generators.
