US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Saturday that Treasury teams deployed worldwide have driven international measures to isolate the Iranian regime economically, commending foreign actions targeting Iranian banking and aviation sectors. In a statement published on X, Bessent said Treasury teams engaged with foreign governments to demand direct economic action, stating that the efforts are bearing fruit.

Regional partners enacted aviation and regulatory measures following the outreach, according to Roya News. Turkey and Oman suspended flights operated by Iranian carrier Mahan Air, while the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced in an official statement issued Thursday the suspension of flights by Iranian airlines to and from the UAE until further notice.

Simultaneously, regional financial regulators moved against Iranian banking institutions. The Central Bank of the UAE announced measures targeting local branches of Iran's Bank Melli citing violations related to anti-money laundering, combating the financing of terrorism, and countering proliferation financing. Additionally, Turkey's Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) revoked the banking license of Iran's Bank Mellat.

The developments follow a two-week diplomatic tour across the Middle East and Europe by Jonathan Burks, US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing. The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Treasury Department held direct discussions with representatives from more than 50 nations.

Bessent noted that the cumulative economic impact has pushed the Iranian rial to historic lows. In an interview with CNBC, Bessent reiterated that secondary sanctions apply globally, stating that Iranian airlines would cease operations as of September 23 and warning that any foreign entity providing refueling, landing services, or ticket sales for Iranian aircraft faces total exclusion from the US dollar system.
