Yemen Calls at UNGA for Shared Global Responsibility to Secure Bab al-Mandab

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Abdullah al-Alimi, Vice President of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, declared that protecting commercial navigation through the Bab al-Mandab Strait is a shared regional and international responsibility that cannot be borne by Yemen alone, TRT World reported.

Al-Alimi emphasized that maritime security across the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden fundamentally depends on stability within Yemen, which requires the restoration of effective state authority. He argued that Houthi forces have been emboldened by the absence of a decisive and effective international position against threats to maritime traffic.

According to the report, the Yemeni official warned that using commercial shipping safety as a blackmail tool endangers the entire international economy and vital global supply chains. He characterised reliance on temporary assurances without durable security arrangements as a strategic mistake.

Al-Alimi called on international partners to enhance economic, military, and security support for Yemen's internationally recognized government, while urging decisive action to prevent advanced weapons and technologies from reaching rebel forces.
