Yemen's military issued a warning on September 26 stating that weapons deployed by the Houthis pose a serious threat to civilian aircraft and international flight corridors over the southern Red Sea.
Military spokesman Majid al-Nazili claimed the Houthis converted Iranian air-defense systems into cruise missiles launched from western Hodeidah province. According to al-Nazili, the missiles can remain airborne for up to 25 minutes using heat-seeking guidance that cannot distinguish between military and civilian targets.
The military stated that the escalation puts commercial airliners, United Nations flights, and humanitarian operations across regional airspace at risk.
