UAE Plans 45 Percent Cut in Power and Water Emissions by 2035

The UAE plans to reduce carbon emissions from electricity and water production by more than 45% by 2035, according to long-term energy system planning reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM). Emissions are projected to fall from approximately 42 million tonnes in 2019 to 23 million tonnes, despite an expected 70% increase in power demand between 2026 and 2033. The strategy relies on expanding Abu Dhabi's solar capacity to over 35 GW, deploying 15 GW of battery storage, and shifting over 95% of water output to reverse osmosis.

The UAE is set to reduce carbon emissions from electricity and water production by more than 45 per cent by 2035, according to the country's long-term energy system planning, reported by TV BRICS citing Emirates News Agency (WAM). Emissions are projected to decrease from around 42 million tonnes in 2019 to approximately 23 million tonnes by 2035, even as electricity demand is forecast to grow by about 70 per cent between 2026 and 2033.

The reduction will be supported by the expansion of renewable energy generation and a shift toward more efficient water production technologies. Abu Dhabi plans to increase solar generation capacity to 14 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and more than 35 GW by 2035, alongside the deployment of up to 15 GW of battery storage capacity. The expansion of utility-scale solar photovoltaic power, battery storage, and reverse osmosis desalination is aimed at strengthening energy and water security while satisfying rising demand.

As renewable generation increases, the role of gas-fired generation in the power mix is expected to decrease. Gas-based facilities will continue to provide grid flexibility to balance variable renewable generation and ensure supply reliability. In water production, reverse osmosis facilities are projected to account for more than 95 per cent of total output by 2035, replacing less efficient processes and lowering sectoral emissions.

These initiatives support Abu Dhabi's Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for electricity production and align with the national UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategy.
