Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) has awarded an AED 10 billion ($2.7 billion) contract for the West Terminal substructure at Al Maktoum International Airport to a joint venture between China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Abu Dhabi-based Tristar Engineering & Construction, according to a report by MEED cited by Gulf Daily News.
The contract marks the progression of the initial phase of the airport's $35 billion expansion program into its primary construction phase. The West Terminal, designed as the second of three planned passenger terminals, will span 800,000 square metres across seven levels and handle up to 45 million passengers per year upon completion.
The terminal will link to the airside via an automated people-mover system that is planned to feature 14 stations at full build-out. DAEP previously awarded an estimated $1.5 billion automated people-mover contract covering four underground stations in the first phase to a joint venture of Mitsubishi Corporation and Larsen & Toubro.
The contract is part of an estimated AED 55 billion pipeline of airport construction packages scheduled for award through late 2026. Future packages still to be awarded include the terminal superstructure, the fourth concourse, the baggage-handling system, and façade and roofing works.
