Gastech 2026 Highlights LNG Market Shifts Across Middle East and Asia

At Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, energy leaders discussed how supply diversification, high prices, and security risks are transforming the global LNG sector. The conference highlighted rising Asian demand, Middle Eastern supply capacities, and diverging views on Middle East geopolitical disruptions. Substantial new liquefaction capacity is anticipated from Qatar and the United States in the coming years.

Gastech 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from September 14 to 17, demonstrated that the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market debate is no longer solely focused on how quickly new capacity can be added, according to an analysis published by Daily Sabah. Discussions centered on energy security, supply diversification, long-term contracts, contract flexibility, and the dampening impact of elevated prices on demand in developing nations.

The event brought together major U.S. companies alongside Asian, European, and Middle Eastern energy giants, with Türkiye represented by state-owned pipeline operator BOTAŞ. According to S&P Global's assessment of the conference, participants held divergent views on the long-term implications of recent Middle Eastern disruptions. While some market participants viewed regional shocks as short-term developments, others anticipated more lasting structural impacts on LNG demand.

Freeman Shaheen, president of Chevron Global Gas, stated at the conference that oil and natural gas will continue to play an important role across the short, medium, and long term. Shaheen characterized disruptions to traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as a short-term issue, emphasizing that Chevron remains focused on a long-term outlook.

However, rising prices have placed LNG's competitiveness in power generation under scrutiny, particularly in developing economies. The Asian benchmark Japan-Korea Marker (JKM) reached $27.39 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) on September 17, marking one of its highest price points since December 2022. Importers in India noted that LNG consumption could expand substantially if prices fall, especially through fuel switching from liquid fuels to gas, a trend shared by multiple economies across South and Southeast Asia.

A central question facing the sector remains which regional markets can economically absorb new volumes, as significant liquefaction capacity from Qatar, the United States, and other producers enters the market in coming years. The conference debate is set to transition from demand affordability to supply and infrastructure next year, when Gastech 2027 takes place in Houston, Texas, from September 14 to 17.
