Washington warned that punitive measures could target entities providing ground-handling, refueling, or landing services to designated Iranian airlines.
Iraq's four top state authorities will meet on Monday evening to discuss restrictions on Iranian flights and US warnings of sanctions against Iraqi airports receiving Iranian carriers, an informed source told Shafaq News. The meeting will include Iraqi President Nizar Amedi, Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, Parliament Speaker Haibet Al-Halbousi, and Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zidan.
According to the source, the talks will also examine mechanisms for placing armed factions' weapons under state control as Iraq nears the declared end of the Global Coalition's presence in two days. Other agenda items include completing remaining cabinet positions and pursuing anti-corruption efforts focused on financial and economic challenges.
No nationwide flight suspension was initially announced across Iraq, but Baghdad, Najaf, Erbil, and Al-Sulaymaniyah airports have halted flights to and from Iran. The restrictions follow US sanctions announced on Sept. 8 against 36 Iran-related aviation targets, including airlines and networks accused of facilitating the movement of weapons, personnel, and illicit cargo.
