UAE and Turkey Bar Iranian Lenders and Ground Flights Amid US Pressure

The United Arab Emirates and Turkey have barred Iran's two largest private lenders from operating and grounded Iranian airlines amid an intensifying US economic pressure campaign. The UAE also moved to halt commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Tehran following maritime security tensions. The measures target a critical trade partner that supplied 31% of Iran's imports in 2024.

The United Arab Emirates and Turkey have barred Iran's two largest private lenders from operating and grounded Iranian airlines, marking the sharpest financial tightening against Tehran since conflict escalated in February, Newsmax reported.

According to the report, the UAE suspended trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran after accusing Tehran of launching ballistic missiles toward maritime traffic. The regulatory and aviation actions sever key commercial channels that previously remained outside the scope of US sanctions enforcement.

World Trade Organization figures cited in the report indicate that the UAE accounted for 31% of Iran's imports in 2024, valued at approximately $21 billion, while receiving 13% of Iranian exports. The cessation of banking and flight operations eliminates significant regional trade conduits.

The actions coincide with an expanded United States economic pressure campaign warning global institutions against maintaining procurement and banking links with Iranian financial institutions and aviation carriers.
