The Japanese government announced additional sanctions against Russia on Friday, targeting a shadow fleet of vessels involved in transporting sanctioned Russian crude oil, the South China Morning Post reported citing Kyodo.

According to Japan's Foreign Ministry, the measures restrict the provision of services—including maritime transport, insurance, ship repairs, and crew employment and dispatch—to 35 vessels comprising cargo ships and tankers. The ministry noted that these vessels are believed to transport Russian crude oil to destinations including China and India, generating revenue for Moscow.

Japan also imposed payment and transaction restrictions on 33 entities and nine individuals linked to Russia, while adding 102 items to its list of export restrictions to the country.

In addition, four entities based in the United Arab Emirates and Turkey were made subject to export prohibitions as part of efforts to curtail sanctions evasion.
